#GiveMe20: Time That Makes a Difference
What Could You Do With 20 Hours?
Local 689 members dedicate their lives to keeping our communities moving. Every day, members report to work, serve the public, and carry the responsibility of keeping our transit systems operating safely and efficiently.
But while many make time for the job, too few are able to make time for their health.
The #GiveMe20 initiative is about recognizing the real impact that 20 hours can have on your health, your family, and your future.
Because preventive care should never be delayed simply because there is not enough time.
The Numbers Tell the Story
According to the 2026 Segal SHAPE Report among Local 689 active and non-retired members:
- Only 33.5% completed cervical cancer screenings
- Only 49.4% received mammograms
- Only 38.7% completed colorectal cancer screenings
- Only 59.6% completed prostate cancer screenings
These numbers are more than statistics. They represent missed appointments, delayed screenings, and opportunities for early detection that could save lives.
Far too many members are postponing preventive care because of demanding schedules, limited time off, and the pressure of balancing work and personal responsibilities.
Why Preventive Care Matters
Routine screenings and annual wellness visits play a critical role in detecting serious illnesses early—often before symptoms appear.
Preventive care can:
- Detect cancer and other illnesses earlier
- Improve treatment outcomes
- Reduce long-term health complications
- Encourage healthier lifestyles and long-term wellness
Early detection saves lives. But early detection only happens when people have the time to access care.
Protecting the People Who Keep the DMV Moving
Local 689 members are essential to the communities they serve. A healthier workforce means:
- Safer operations
- Stronger communities
- Reduced long-term health risks
- Longer, healthier careers
When workers are supported in taking care of themselves, everyone benefits.
