Transit Employees’ Health and Welfare Plan Responds to Tragic Incident near WMATA Division; Counseling Support Available for Members 

FORESTVILLE, MARYLAND — April 9, 2026 — In response to the tragic event that occurred earlier this morning near a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) division, Transit Employees’ Health and Welfare Plan (TEHW) extends its deepest condolences to all those impacted. 

The safety, health, and wellbeing of our members remain our highest priority. In response to this incident, our office is mobilizing immediate support services to ensure that Local 689 members have access to the care and resources they need during this difficult time. 

On-site professional counselors will be available at both the Montgomery and Western Bus Divisions to provide confidential support to members. Services will be offered through April 24, 2026, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., creating a safe and accessible space for members to process, reflect, and receive guidance as they navigate the emotional impact of this tragedy. 

TEHW will continue to coordinate with both WMATA and ATU Local 689 leadership to provide additional support as needed.
